Winter Solstice or Yule
Solstice means "sun stands still" and "Yule" is derives from the Norse word for "wheel".  This is the longest night of the year, the night that darkness rules, when we internalize and synthesize the outward-directed activities of the previous summer months.  Remember that darkness ... is neither benevolent nor malevolent; it is simply dark and part of the dualistic nature of deity and therefore of the cosmos.  The Winter Solstice has long been associated with the birth or awakening of a "Divine King," since before Christianity came about. Since the sun is usually thought to represent the male aspect of divinity, ... this time is celebrated as the "return of the Sun God" during which he is reborn.  We honor the winter solstice by gathering together to honor the passing year and preparing ourselves for birth into a personification of the new sun.  We give thanks for the lessons learned throughout the year.  From here on the days will slowly be getting a little bit longer and the light a little bit stronger as the Wheel turns back towards Springtime.  Yule is halfway around the Wheel Year from Midsummer, which is the Summer Solstice.  It's the first official day of Winter.
